Newcastle United’s record goal scorer, Alan Shearer, today announced that he will be joining forces with Steve Wraith and the Newcastle Legends to bring a footballing spectacle to Kingston Park this October.

Shearer makes his return to the dugout in charge of a Newcastle team for the first time since May 2009, the end of his brief spell as manager of Newcastle United and recently stated that: “Nothing ever tempted me and that’s it now. I’d be amazed if I ever went back into it.

“The longer you are out of it, the more difficult it is to get back in. You have got to have a real desire to do it, which I don’t. But the main reason I won’t go back is because I love what I am doing now. I’m at the FA Cup final and then the Euros this summer - it’s a very privileged job to be in.”

However, he has been tempted back, for one game only, and after several months of communication between Alan Shearer, Steve Wraith, Keith Gillespie and the Falcons, the former United number nine will manage the Newcastle Legends.

The game, in aid of ‘The Alan Shearer Foundation’ and is entitled ‘The Entertainers 20th Anniversary Game’ features friends of Alan Shearer and Keith Gillespie representing Newcastle and Manchester selects as the 20th anniversary of ‘Howay 5-Oh’ comes about.

At the press conference, in the Newcastle Falcons Media Suite, Steve Wraith announced the match and was delighted that Shearer was willing to go into the dugout, one more time, for charity.

Steve said: “It took a lot of persuading but I’m glad he’s going to be in the dugout as manager of the Newcastle Legends.

“I’m pleased both he, and Keith (Gillespie) who’ll select the Manchester side, have agreed to do this.”

Doing it one more time, Alan, a Newcastle United legend in his own right, added: “I don’t think I’ll be player-manager, my body is not as good as it used to be.

“With Les (Ferdinand) in the dug-out with me I’m sure I can get the likes of Rob (Lee) and Bez (John Beresford) involved.

“Rob though needs a good three months to get fit (Shearer joked)”
