During two spells on Tyneside Peter Beardsley became a cult hero, and rightly so.
Diminutive, talented, a magician on and off the ball, ‘Pedro’ was all that and more, after all why do you think Liverpool, Everton and England held him in just as high regards as the Newcastle faithful did.
A product of the famous Wallsend Boys Club, Beardsley started his professional career in Cumbria, with Carlisle, before heading to Canada and Vancouver Whitecaps in 1982. An all to brief spell at Old Trafford would see the little magician head back to Canada before returning to Newcastle in 1983, playing alongside Keegan, Waddle, Gazza et al.
Helping the Magpies to promotion from the old First Division certainly put him in the shop window and Kenny Dalglish’s Liverpool bought him in July 1987 for a then national record £1.9 million.
His days on Merseyside were the more successful of his career winning two League titles, and FA Cup, and three Charity Shield’s before moving across town to Everton.
Returning home in 1993, former team-mate Kevin Keegan splashing out £1.5 million on the now fully-fledged England international, Beardsley went on to form a deadly partnership with Andy Cole as Newcastle took the Premier League by storm in the early stages of the Entertainers era.
Beardsley and Cole would smash 66 goals in that debut Premier League season warranting his place in the Entertainers line-up for the upcoming charity game.
Currently employed by the club in a coaching capacity Beardsley said: “I am really looking forward to playing for ‘The Entertainers’ one last time.
“It is for a great cause and it will be nice to see the lads again.
“I enjoyed both my spells at the club as a player but that second spell saw us come close to winning the Premier League so it stands out. It is hard to believe that it is 20 years ago but it is a real testament to the team that we are still held in such high esteem by our supporters.”
