This year’s Pavel Cup, the second annual event played in memory of former Newcastle United goalkeeper, Pavel Srnicek, takes on extra meaning this year as it coincides with the ten year anniversary of the passing of Chris ‘Hitman’ Heron.
A former teammate of event organiser, and Srnicek’s agent, Steve Wraith whilst at Sunday League side Felling FC the game, which takes place at the UTS Stadium in Dunston, will be again in aid of St Oswald’s Hospice.
This year fans will see a celebrity Pavel Srnicek XI take on a Felling FC XI to commemorate two much loved, local heroes. Organiser Steve Wraith saying: “ Last years event was a real success and we raised over three thousand pounds for St Oswalds hospice. It would be great to raise a little more this year. The lads all give their time for free and every penny goes to the cause. It felt right to pay tribute to my good friend Chris Heron this year. Never a day goes by without me thinking of both Chris and Pav and I am sure the public will turn out in their hundreds to celebrate their respective lives.”
So far some of the players confirmed include former Newcastle United stars Steve Harper, Steve Howey, Darren Peacock, Jamie McClen, and Paul Robinson alongside that of Phil Mason, Paul Watson, comedian Gavin Webster, Britain’s Got Talent finalist Danny Posthill, and the Evening Chronicles Lee Ryder.
Siobhan Sargeant, Corporate Fundraiser for St Oswald’s Hospice added: “We are really looking forward to the second Pavel Cup this July!
“Last year’s event was fantastic and our supporters and volunteers had a great day watching some real local heroes back on the pitch again.
“The event celebrated the life of Pavel and also raised £5000 for St Oswald’s Hospice which was a charity close to the heart of Pavel and his family. We are honoured to be the beneficiaries of the year’s event.
“This year, St Oswald’s Dunston shop will be dedicating a shop window to the event and we hope supporters will keep their eye out for local promotions.
“St Oswald’s Hospice relies on the support of local communities to raise the £8 million each year we need to keep the charity going. Thanks to all involved in this event for your support.”
The event takes place on July 9 at the UTS Stadium, Dunston and gates open at 12 noon where there’ll be a number of fun activities around the main event itself.
