“It was once, twice, three times from Tino and the Toon were turning cartwheels.”
Remembered for that one night during the 1997-98 Champions League campaign, Faustino Hernan Asprilla Hinestroza became a cult hero.
Against Barcelona, in September 1997, the first came from the penalty spot after ‘keeper Ruud Hesp upended the enigmatic Colombian following a through-ball from Jon Dahl Tomasson, then, two crosses from winger Keith Gillespie resulted in two headers from Tino which put the Toon Army in delirious dreamland.
They were his last goals for the club, but he will never be forgotten on Tyneside, and now, signing for the Legends, we’ll see a lot more of him.

Signing in February 1996, at a cost of some £6.7 million, Tino was lauded over in Italy where, at Parma, he scored amazing goals and won trophies. Best remembered for an impressive 27-yard, second half free kick which ended then champions, AC Milan, 58 match unbeaten streak, Tino would help the club to a trio of European triumphs including two UEFA Cups, in 1995 and 1999, either side of his spell at St. James.
In the famous black & white Newcastle, although trophies fell short, he scored goals and celebrated well, giving the fans something they loved - style, class and commitment on the field. He would score eighteen times whilst at the Toon, claiming two Premier League runners-up medals before then manager, Kenny Dalglish, sent him back to Italy, and Parma, for £6 million.
Now though, he is, in part, back on Tyneside as part of Steve Wraith’s Newcastle Legends. The Colombian international said of his joining: “I am happy to be part of Newcastle Legends.
“It is 20 years since we almost won the Premier League and to sign the contract brought back a lot of happy memories. In the last two weeks I have visited Parma and Newcastle. In Parma we celebrated the teams success but in Newcastle I felt sadness for these great fans who deserve so much more.
“I have known Steve Wraith many years now and he is a good friend. We have worked together many times and I look forward to returning to Newcastle later this year for a couple of very big events with him and my good friend Carlos (Valbuena).”
Managing Director of Newcastle Legends, Steve Wraith, added: “This is another great signing for Newcastle Legends.
“We have worked with Tino for many years now and the friendship has grown. He is a Newcastle icon and the fans love him. We are working on two big projects for October which we will announce very shortly.”
